Reverse Osmosis Service and Filters
Why Is Reverse Osmosis Service Important?
Reverse Osmosis Filter Timeline (Beyond the Membrane): Pre-Sediment & Carbon Filters (Every 6–12 months): These catch the heavy dirt, rust, and—crucially—chlorine. Chlorine will eat holes right through a delicate RO membrane, ruining it prematurely. This also depends on the condition of the water “City Water” or “Well Water” and the overall water consumption.
The RO Membrane (2-5 Years): This is the heart of the system that rejects microscopic contaminants, heavy metals, and total dissolved solids (TDS).
Post-Carbon & Alkalize Filters: The final “polish” for taste just before the water hits your faucet.(Every 20-24 months):
Sanitization is Key: Every time a system is opened for a filter change, it should be sanitized. Over time, a microscopic layer of bacteria (biofilm) can build up inside the storage tank or the filter housings. A professional service includes flushing the system with a food-grade sanitizing solution to keep the water pure and safe.
How Do You Actually Know The System Is Working?
Professional validation usually involves two key checks:
TDS Testing: Measuring the total dissolved solids (TDS) of the incoming tap water versus the purified water helps evaluate system performance. A properly functioning RO system should reject approximately 90%–95% or more of dissolved solids. If the rejection rate drops below this level, it may indicate that the membrane has failed or that other components are worn and need service or replacement.
Tank Pressure Check: RO systems rely on a pressurized bladder tank to deliver water to your sink. Over time, these tanks can lose air pressure, which may result in reduced water flow, longer refill cycles, or the system continuously sending water to the drain.
Keeping an eye on these components ensures you consistently receive high-quality, purified water while helping prevent water waste, contaminants that may negatively affect health, and potential system failure.
Service & Maintenance Failure
- Damages system performance and reduces the overall purity of the output water.
- Reduces the system’s water output volume and pressure flow.
- Increases your water bill due to higher contaminated wastewater production.
- Causes unpleasant tastes and/or odors in your water.
- Older systems may develop leaks, potentially leading to water damage in your home.
- Promotes the accumulation and growth of waterborne pathogens (fouling) in the filtration system and storage tank. Mold, mildew, bacteria, and other contaminants may pose a health risk.
What is the Lifespan of a Reverse Osmosis System? With professional servicing, regular filter replacements, and system sanitization every 6–12 months, an RO system can provide reliable performance for approximately 8–10 years. Routine maintenance is important, as components such as the RO drinking faucet, storage tank, and membrane will naturally wear over time and may need replacement.
